Native American Indians lived on the land and were often killed by the natives. Eventually, white men began settling in Winthrop, which became a town in 1651. Native Americans lived in Winthrop, including the Rumney Marsh Indians, who were part of a great tribe called the Aberginians. Before white men arrived, two events cut down the red man population in Winthrop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1767, the English government passed the Townsend Acts, which funded the salaries of colonial government officials. However, the English government was forced to amend its plans after violent opposition erupted. Most taxes were rescinded, except for the tax on tea. However, this did not stop Winthrop residents from protesting against these taxes and the English government. In December 1773, three tea ships slipped into Winthrop harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Snowfall in Winthrop, MA is significantly seasonal. From November 14 to April 11, there are 4.9 months in which snowfall is less than one inch. The snowiest month is January, with an average 7.7 inches of snow falling there. The driest months are February, April, and August. While there is a substantial variation in the snowfall in Winthrop, Massachusetts, there are still significant differences between these two seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to schools, the town of Winthrop had 48 pupils in 1854. Twelve Tewksburys, nine Floyds, and an equal number of Belchers attended the schools in the town. A year later, the schools outgrew their quarters. As the town began to grow rapidly, the schools were moved. The old schoolhouse was purchased by George Belcher and moved to Winthrop Street. He then built a town hall, which featured two school rooms on the ground floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Methodist Episcopal Church was established in Winthrop in 1818. The founder of the church, Fred W. A. S. Brown, held worship services in an 1805 school building until 1834. It was remodeled during the Civil War and is still standing on the Winthrop street. This structure is called Durham&#8217;s Block, and has interesting bits of history from leading townsmen. It is a place worth visiting!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several other important historical figures in Winthrop have ties to the town&#8217;s past. In the year 1730, the first of the Tewksbury family to settle in Winthrop was John Tewksbury. His grandfather, Henrie Tewksbury, was a freeman in Newbury, Massachusetts in 1669. His father and brother Henry were also influential.
