For instance, Thurmont&#8217;s median age is 3.1 years older than Emmitsburg&#8217;s, while its median housing cost is 13.0% higher. Both towns are located about 90 minutes from Baltimore. The cost of living in Emmitsburg is very similar to that of Thurmont, so you&#8217;ll be spending roughly the same amount on a monthly basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While in Emmitsburg, you can visit the Catoctin Mountain Orchard, which was established in 1948. It is known for its premium Cabernet Franc varietals. Guests are also welcome to enjoy the farm-to-table, home-cooked baked goods, and unique gift shops. The locals love this place! The town also has a family-friendly playground. In addition, it&#8217;s one of the largest outdoor craft shows in the Eastern United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 66th Annual Thurmont and Emmitsburg Community Show is the town&#8217;s largest event. It is held at Catoctin High School from September 9-11. The committee is led by Rodman Myers, who was elected president. The committee will work to plan the show. If you&#8217;re planning on attending, be sure to check out the local school district website. Listed schools&#8217; service boundaries may change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another event to check out while visiting Emmitsburg is Lawyer&#8217;s Winterbrook Farm. The farm produces thousands of bales of hay every year. The farm was established by Jan and Kristen Lawyer, but is best known for its annual harvest corn maze. The maze was designed by independent maze design company Mazeplay. It features a map and checkpoints to help participants navigate the maze. Unlike many other activities, this event also raises funds for local charities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the covered bridge, visitors to Thurmont and Emmitsburg can enjoy the beautiful Monocacy River view from the Roddy Road Covered Bridge. This historic bridge, built in 1848, is Maryland&#8217;s oldest and shortest covered bridge. Located just west of U.S. Route 15, the bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. In 1991, arson destroyed the bridge, but it was rebuilt based on the framing from the original bridge. It now has a load capacity of 15 tons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October 2014, U.S. District Judge William D. Quarles Jr. sentenced Jacob Powell, 21, of Thurmont, to seven years in prison for conspiracy to distribute heroin. In addition to his prison sentence, he was also ordered to pay more than $7,000 in restitution to his victim. His plea agreement details his role in the distribution of heroin in western Maryland. Powell and Myers obtained the drug from sources in Thurmont and resold it to customers in Emmitsburg and Thurmont.
