Nearby cities include Williamsburg, Poquoson, Mathews, and Hampton. It is home to several museums and is part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. And if you like to eat outdoors, you can always rent a kayak or stand-up paddle board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While you are in Yorktown, be sure to visit the American Revolution Museum, near the York River. It features a surprising number of exhibits and films illustrating the events that helped form the United States. While you are here, you should check out the introductory film, &#8220;Liberty Fever,&#8221; which gives an overview of the events of the 1770s and early 1800s. A video like this one will help you understand the historical context of the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While visiting Yorktown, don&#8217;t miss the National Cemetery, where many Civil War veterans were buried. It&#8217;s near the spot where the British surrendered to General Washington. The National Cemetery is located nearby, and the American Revolution Museum is a living history museum. Visitors can watch films and explore re-creations of Revolutionary-era farm and Continental Army encampments. It&#8217;s an excellent place to learn about the town&#8217;s rich history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town of Yorktown, VA is part of the historic Triangle of America. The city is home to the Battle of Yorktown, which ended the Revolutionary War and put the United States on the map. The town is a relatively small place, with a population of just over two hundred. Nevertheless, you can still experience the historic past in Yorktown! When it comes to traveling, don&#8217;t miss the historic area of Yorktown, VA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1862, the Union Army captured Yorktown and made it a base for the Peninsula Campaign. This was also the year when the Union Army of the Potomac launched its attack on Richmond from Yorktown. It would take almost six months to capture Richmond after the siege. At the end of the war, the town was reduced to less than seventy buildings. The town was never as prosperous as it once was. The town suffered a fire in 1814 that destroyed its waterfront district, some homes and the town&#8217;s courthouse on Main Street. In 1862, more destruction occurred during the Civil War siege and the occupation of the town by Union troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The British had fortified Yorktown after its defeat in the Battle of Philadelphia. The British had a large fleet in the area, but it was ineffective at bringing down the French. As the battle went on, the French and the Americans gained the upper hand. Moreover, the British army was forced to abandon its fortified positions.
