Located in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness, Wrangell is home to a rich gold rush history. In the 1850s, this town was the center of three gold rushes. These were the Stikine River Gold Rush, the Cassiar River Gold Rush, and the Klondike Gold Run. In 1861, the Hudson Bay Company hired Buck Choquette to locate gold in the Stikine River. He would eventually lead a stampede that eventually brought prosperity to Wrangell.

The region was once home to the Tlingit Indians, but outside forces were not yet able to visit the Native Alaskans. In 1811, Russian explorers began trading furs with local Tlingit tribes. In 1833, Lieutenant Dionysius Zarembo landed at the present-day site of Wrangell. This settlement was enclosed by a dense wall of pointed logs. In the years that followed, Spanish and English explorers began to scout the area.

Water and electricity are supplied through municipally owned utilities, and a gravity system from a mountain stream. The town’s population of about 1500 people is one of its most important assets.
