The town of Yarmouth is located in Cumberland County, approximately twelve miles north of Portland. Originally, the town was known as North Yarmouth, a district of Massachusetts that existed for more than two hundred years. Today, Yarmouth is home to a large, vibrant population of approximately 42,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city of Yarmouth is a mid-size coastal city located on the Casco Bay in southern Maine. The most pleasant months to visit Yarmouth include July and August. The least comfortable months include January. The city is home to several historical sites, including the Cushing and Hannah Prince House. The town also has a historic railroad station that was built in 1848. And the Hannaford plaza was once a drive-in theater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Beth Condon Pathway begins at the Town Hall parking lot. You can enter the town from I-295 by taking exit 15. The path will cross Route 1 and head north towards Main St. Turn right on Cleaves St and continue until you reach the Royal River. Take the path back the way you came, and you will find yourself in the woods and alongside the Royal River. The pathway is approximately one mile long. During the summer, you can also visit the Bresca and Honeybee restaurant on the Outlet Beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several attractions and activities to keep you busy while you are in Yarmouth. The town is home to a charming Main Street Village, a harbor with protected waters, and a thriving community of over eight thousand people. The Maine Visitor&#8217;s Center is located off Route 1 at Exit 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the summer, Yarmouth is a popular vacation destination. Every July, Yarmouth holds its famous Clam Festival, which has three days of fun activities. You can visit Lower Falls Landing, a complex of marine-related businesses, and enjoy waterfront dining at the Royal River Grillhouse. You can also purchase groceries at the grocery store located under the highway bridge. There are plenty of places to eat and shop. You can even take your kids to the clam festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a historic landmark in Yarmouth, you should visit the Captain S.C. Blanchard House, a beautifully ornate Italianate house. Located at 317 Main Street, it was built by Sylvanus Blanchard, a wealthy shipbuilder. The architect of this building, Charles A. Alexander, also designed Portland&#8217;s Chestnut Street Methodist Church. This church is currently used for special events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until 1847, the town had two railroad junctions. Yarmouth Junction was located on Depot Road, west of East Elm Street. While the station is no longer in use, a trolley line ran between Yarmouth and Freeport. The Kennebec &amp; Portland Railway replaced the Maine Central Railroad in 1849, and the St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad arrived in 1848. In 1912, a train wreck took place near Dunn&#8217;s Corner. A westbound freight train was backing 25 cars into the siding when it was approached by a Portland-bound train.
