The town was first settled as North Yarmouth in 1636, and for 213 years, it was a district of Massachusetts. Today, this town is home to a vibrant arts scene, and offers visitors a wide array of events and attractions. If you&#8217;re planning a trip to Yarmouth, here are some tips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interstate 295 runs through Yarmouth, Maine, and is elevated on both sides of the town. It crosses the Royal River just out of view and runs over the western edge of the town&#8217;s harbor. Yarmouth is the home of the large map-making company DeLorme, whose headquarters are located just north of town on Route 1. DeLorme was purchased by Garmin in 2016 and a brewery opened in Brickyard Hollow in June 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Town of Yarmouth is home to several historic sites, including a charming Main Street Village, green space along the Royal River, and a sheltered port in Yarmouth Harbor. Its population is more than eight thousand, and it boasts many unique attractions and cultural events. For your visit, don&#8217;t forget to stop by the Maine Visitor&#8217;s Center, which is located off of RT 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearby attractions include Cousins and Littlejohn Islands, which are popular for kayaking and fishing. Sandy Point Beach, meanwhile, is a peaceful spot with low tides. Families can picnic here. Watch kayaks and sailboats or lobster boats as they go by. Be careful, though, as there are rocky areas where visitors can fall in. If you&#8217;re visiting Yarmouth, make sure you stay out of the mud!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The river is home to several waterfalls. Baker&#8217;s Falls was the most active of the four. The first buildings were built in 1805. These buildings included a grist mill, nail mill, and fulling mill. In 1830, the Yarmouth Paper Company was established on the site of the old Fulling Mill. The company eventually expanded to ten buildings and occupied more than ten acres of the town&#8217;s waterfront.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town has two cemeteries. The 1731 Pioneer Cemetery is the town&#8217;s first public burial site. The 1770 Ledge Cemetery, which is about 2.5 acres, is a historic graveyard. The family of Captain Nicholas Drinkwater is buried in the 1770 Ledge Cemetery, while his daughter is buried at Riverside Cemetery. Both of them are owned by the Yarmouth Village Improvement Society. It is also the town&#8217;s largest property tax payer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The oldest church in Yarmouth was the First Parish Congregational church. It was built in 1730, and has since been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The church was incorporated into the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. Its interior remains as it was in 1868.
