Humans may have visited the park as long as 8,000 years ago, and people have been living in the region for nearly 4,000 years. The Miwok tribe inhabited this area, but their way of life was drastically disrupted during the California Gold Rush in 1849. As a result, the Miwok population dwindled to a few disbanded Indian villages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cliffs and domes of Yosemite Valley were formed about ten million years ago when the Sierra Nevada mountains were first raised up by a fault. The fault shifted upward, creating gentler western slopes and more extreme eastern slopes. The resulting layered granite formed by erosion and four glacial periods exposed the underlying granite, producing cracked, weathered, and rounded formations. This granite was also covered by glaciers, which carved wide U-shaped valleys and steep walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visitors to the park can purchase souvenirs at several stores, run by the Yosemite Conservancy and the Ansel Adams Gallery. Both stores have mail-order options and offer educational materials and postcards. Members of the Conservancy are entitled to a 15% discount on most purchases. Gas stations are located in Tuolumne Meadows and Crane Flat, while there are grocery stores in Yosemite Village and Curry Village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While a road network covers most of the popular areas of the park, the vast majority of the area can be reached only by hiking. The Pacific Crest Trail and the John Muir Trail are two popular routes, leading to areas outside the park. Regardless of the season, the landscape of Yosemite is spectacular and worth a visit. A visit to this national park is sure to inspire you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visitors to the park can enjoy three distinct seasons. Summer temperatures range from 50degF to the mid-90s, while fall and spring temperatures are more temperate. However, visitors should note that traffic and parking in the valley can be very congested, and that parking lots are usually scarce. Winter temperatures range from 30degF to 16degC and rain and snow are common. Yosemite is also popular during the winter, but if you do not want to experience snow and ice, visit in the spring or summer instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bear incidents have decreased in recent years, but the park does have its fair share of wildlife threats. During the night, bears are especially active and will be looking for food sources. Follow park regulations regarding food storage and use of deodorants. There are over 150 species of birds and seventeen species of bats in Yosemite Valley. Rare species include the Gilbert&#8217;s skink and mountain kingsnake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two main entrances to Yosemite National Park. The Arch Rock Entrance is the closest to Yosemite Valley. It is also the most scenic, but it is best visited after storms and is popular with photographers. There are two small parking lots at this entrance, so it&#8217;s best to arrive early to get a good spot.
