It was established as a post by the Hudson&#8217;s Bay Company in 1847, and was named for the captain of the Hudson&#8217;s Bay Company. The Hudson&#8217;s Bay Company established a trading post in the area in 1758 and met with the native peoples in the area. The company later built a village near the fort, which included English, Scottish, and Iroquois support workers. There were nine percent of children under eighteen living with their parents, and twelve percent were under the age of 18 living alone. Twenty-seven percent of households were headed by a married couple, and forty-three percent of the population were non-families. Twenty-one percent of the population was single and eight percent of seniors were 65 and older.
