See Strasbourg from a totally new perspective by hiking through the line of its century-old streets. The surprisingly compact 4.5 hours hike follows the graceful, straight-line street network around the ancient city. You’ll see the beautiful river port, surviving parts of the old walled city and the equally impressive European parliament building. For more majestic scenery, hire a guide who knows the city’s secrets. But be warned: some parts of this route are closed for security reasons.

Another option is to simply walk in the footsteps of historic Strasbourg city blocks. This is possible both in the open countryside along the route or by taking the path inside the city to get a panoramic view of Strasbourg’s regional park. The trail starts in the village of Moseley and covers the major streets of Moseley Park, Strasbourg Central and Moseley Point. If you are interested in history and architecture, take a detour to the Castle of Roses, which was used by Catherine the Great as her fortress during her marriage to Henry II. You may also want to visit the Anne Bonny House, which is closed to the public but offers an interesting glimpse into the life of former royal family members.

If you prefer hiking to walking, you should consider taking the trail towards the castles in the Strassen region. While only a few hours long, this route is much more rewarding because you get the chance to see many castles before reaching the city center. Among the most famous ones are the Castles of Euvellette, St-Germain and Chambertin de Monthier (the last castle to be built by medieval knights). On reaching Strasbourg city center, you will probably find the medieval town of Meursault-sur-Mer, which was the point where the two halves of the city separated. If you have more time, take a train from Strasbourg to Antimine, which will allow you to reach the heart of Strasbourg: the Grand Place.

If you are not as keen on hiking, taking a tram or a boat will bring you much closer to the beauty of nature. While you are in the area, why not try some activities such as river rafting, parasailing or swimming? You will be amazed by the natural beauty of the area, especially the surrounding alsace region. To make sure that you do not miss the beautiful scenery, hire a guide who will help you get through the region. One of the most popular tours offered in the northern vosges regional park is “ogsued” – meaning walking around in a hammock.

From the Grand Place, take the “rue des rue des Olivers” road which leads you straight to the “rue de la Plage.” The streets lead you to a beautiful park with picnic tables and benches. The last building you pass is the castle – here you will learn about the famous story of “the lady of the lamp.” On your way back from your relaxing tour in Strasbourg, don’t forget to stop by the “hotel de sueur.” This is the ideal place to stop by for a coffee and a hot meal (or a bit of light refreshment).

The northern vosges regional park offers hiking trails which can be extended or shortened depending on your preferred route. The trail starts in the southern part of the city (the part directly opposite from the tourist office). Hiking this trail will give you a unique insight into the life of Strasbourg before its transformation to a modern city. It will also show you the wonderful world of nature that surrounds the city of Strasbourg. A truly unforgettable experience.
