Founded in 1565, the town still feels European. Its Spanish-colonial-style architecture makes it feel very European. A stroll through the historic center of the city will give you a feel for how this city was settled centuries ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A visit to St. Augustine&#8217;s historic district is worth the time. The town is filled with many historic buildings and monuments, including the Monson Motor Lodge where Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested. He was reportedly shot and burned by a mob outside a hotel in St. Augustine. The hotel&#8217;s manager, James Brock, was president of the Florida Hotel and Motel Association at the time, and it was later found that the protesters had jumped into the hotel&#8217;s pool and were poured muriatic acid into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A visit to the Oldsmar district will give you the chance to visit the oldest schoolhouse in the country. It was built by a Minorcan settler, Juan Genopol, who owned a railroad company. The schoolhouse is situated next to an old gristmill, which is now the Mill Top Tavern.
