This caused the ground&#8217;s elevation to drop as it approached the shorelines of the rivers. There were two creeks in the area, Queen&#8217;s Creek and College Creek. The city&#8217;s land area was approximately six miles (9.7 km) wide. The Virginia Living Museum is another nearby attraction. The town was the site of the first successful printing press in the U.S., and the town was the site of Patrick Henry&#8217;s famous speech against the Stamp Act. The city then declined in importance when the state government moved to Richmond in 1780. And finally, Williamsburg was captured by the Confederate forces during the American Civil War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Civil War, Williamsburg is a great place to experience historic charm. The General Assembly&#8217;s decision to stay in Williamsburg led to a massive building spree. Soon after, wealthy planters and merchants moved to the area. The area began thriving, and tradesmen began to profit from it. During this boomtown period, silversmith James Geddy bought a house in 1842.
