Its municipal government is based on sales tax, and provides aggressive incentive packages to attract businesses. In mid-1990s, the city&#8217;s public relations efforts were successful, and Amarillo was named after Spanish shepherds. The yellow-colored soil is thought to have inspired the town&#8217;s name.
