Acoma and Laguna Pueblos are neighbors in New Mexico. The two share language, culture, and a high school. The Laguna Pueblo is the site of the abandoned Homestake mill. The Acoma community has a history of religious and economic development. In fact, San Jose is the patron saint of both communities. In the early 1800s, Father Ramirez brought a painting of San Jose to Acoma from King Charles II. People credited the painting with superhuman powers and prosperity.

During the 19th century, the Laguna and Acoma people struggled to keep their traditional lifestyles. They adopted aspects of Spanish culture and religion. By the 1880s, the railroads began to bring more settlers to the region, ending the isolation of the pueblos. In addition to their historic architecture, the Acoma and Laguna Pueblos also have a vibrant arts and crafts industry.

Acoma and Laguna Pueblos are located west of the Rio Grande on the San Jose River. The Keresan Indians maintain their origins in the mythical Shipapu. They gradually drifted south to the Rio Grande. In the Tiuonyi region, they built cliff dwellings made of friable volcanic tufa. These buildings still exist today. This is one reason why the Acoma and Laguna Pueblos can be considered World Heritage Sites.

Acoma and Laguna Pueblos are the only federally recognized Native American tribes in the U.S. These communities are home to more than 5000 tribal members. The villages are still largely undeveloped and do not have sewer, water, or electricity. In 1629, the Spanish mission San Esteban del Rey was completed in this region. The Acoma and Laguna Pueblos were a significant part of the culture of the region. In fact, the Acoma and the Laguna Pueblos are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Acoma Mesa is the only place in the U.S. where you can stand on four states at the same time. This region includes Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, and Navajo Nation. The Acoma and Laguna Pueblos are both rich in Native American culture and are home to America’s largest Indian reservation. The “Indian Capital of the World” is the most ancient Indian community in the country.

The two Pueblos are not connected. Acoma was the first to build a church. Acoma was ordered to do so in 1791 by Father Juan Ramirez. The community moved 20,000 short tons of stone from Mount Taylor to build the walls. The building features 60-foot (18 m)-tall wood pillars. The structure represents the cultures of the Laguna and Acoma.

LM’s Bluewater, New Mexico Disposal Site is southeast of the Acoma and Laguna Pueblos. The Bluewater site was contaminated due to uranium-ore processing. The contaminated soils were a result of demolished mill structures and nearby property materials. It has also impacted the local water supply. The Acoma and Laguna Pueblos have requested that the Indian Health Service stop the project that affects their communities.
