The school in Acoma was established in 1699 and has been a part of the community ever since. The Acoma Indians originally settled near the site for hunting and farming purposes. They were soon joined by residents from neighboring pueblos and the village was formally incorporated as a permanent settlement in July 1699. The Laguna Pueblo had once been home to 19 distinct clans, but today, many are extinct.

In 1680, Acoma and Laguna Pueblo Indians organized a general revolt against the Spanish. The Spanish overgrazed the land and made it unusable for agriculture. This resulted in famine, erosion, and drought. The religious leaders sent runners carrying maguey fibers on their heads to mark the day of the revolt. The unified stand ultimately drove the Spanish from the area. They killed many Spaniards, but did not commit mass slaughter.

The Acoma and Laguna Pueblos shared language, high school, and neighbors. The two pueblos were connected by ladders. Water sources were obtained primarily from natural cisterns. Both communities were surrounded by mountains and had a number of natural springs. During the time of the Spanish conquistadors, kivas, or ceremonial chambers, were built on top of the natural cisterns.

The Acoma and Laguna Pueblos were settled by Ancestral Pueblo people. These people were hostile to their nomadic neighbors and their native neighboring tribes. The Navajo people referred to these people as Anasazi, which means “ancestors of the enemy”. The name is still in use today but has been replaced by the more appropriate and apt name Anasazi.

The Acoma and Laguna Pueblos have lived in isolation for thousands of years. In the 19th century, Acoma and Laguna Pueblos continued to practice their traditional ways of life. However, the Acomas also began to adopt Spanish traditions, such as the Catholic religion. While there were no schisms between the Laguna and Acoma Pueblos, their communities have remained united by faith.

Both Acoma and Laguna Pueblos are located in the Rio San Jose river basin. Both towns are connected by the ridges of the river. The Acoma and Laguna share a high school. Both communities have well-established Tribal Law systems. The Acoma and Laguna Pueblos participated in the Department of Justice’s “Weed and Seed” program to study the effectiveness of social programs on Native American lands.

The Acoma and Laguna Pueblos have a rich cultural heritage. In addition to their ancestral villages, they are divided into six major villages, each with a unique culture and identity. The Acoma and Laguna Pueblo have a rich history of art and culture and are considered among the most significant in New Mexico. They also have a very modern-day constitution and a modern-day church.
