After the United States took control of the entire region, the Spanish were forced to give up their claim to the island. In return, British residents were required to leave the island within 18 months, swear allegiance to the Spanish Crown, and convert to Catholicism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A strong amateur theatre scene is one of the highlights of summertime in Amelia Island. The Amelia Island Dance Festival presents performances of acclaimed dancers and a satirical play about the life of newspaper columnist Erma Bombeck. Musicals are also common in Amelia. During Christmas time, the Amelia Island Dance Festival presents Scrooge, a musical adaptation of Charles Dickens&#8217; A Christmas Carol. Another holiday show to see is &#8220;I&#8217;ll Be Home For The Holidays&#8221; featuring five historic homes in the downtown historical district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amelia Island is known for its beautiful beaches. Visitors should check out the beaches and visit the town&#8217;s marina. It is a great place to relax and enjoy a nice holiday. The city&#8217;s amateur theatre scene is also active. The Amelia Island Dance Festival presents the play At Wit&#8217;s End, which is about the famous American newspaper columnist Erma Bombeck. The city also hosts many musicals. The best known of these include &#8220;Scrooge&#8221; (a musical adaptation of Charles Dickens&#8217; A Christmas Carol) and &#8220;I&#8217;ll Be Home For Christmas,&#8221; which features five homes in the historic downtown district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fernandina Beach, the northern part of Amelia Island, is home to a National Historic District. The downtown area includes Victorian-style homes. The town&#8217;s famous fudge and ice cream shops are a must-see for any tourist. The beach is the best place to enjoy the Florida sunsets. And the town&#8217;s historic architecture is worth exploring. Its restaurants and cafes are quaint, but not touristy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from the beaches, the island is also home to several state parks. The State Parks in Fernandina Beach are located on the east end of the island and offer a wide range of activities. Families with young children should consider a photo opportunity with St. Nick at the Welcome Center. While visiting the island, make sure to take pictures of your children with this holiday tradition.
