As of the 2020 census, the population of Arcata was 18,857. Originally settled in the 1850s, the city was named Union and was officially established in 1858. In 1860, the city was renamed and is known as a tourist destination with a quaint downtown. Its history dates back to the Gold Rush, so it is not surprising that the town is thriving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of its politics, Arcata is surprisingly liberal compared to other coastal cities. In the last presidential election, the Republican candidate John McCain won less than ten percent of the vote, while his Democratic opponent, Barack Obama, received over eighty-five percent. This is due in part to the large number of students attending the university and the town&#8217;s liberal political climate. The community is also a hotbed of social activism, and local politicians are actively promoting social change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite its age, many people move to the city for the sunshine, beaches, and redwoods. The town&#8217;s demographics are somewhat skewed by its large population of college-age students. About 15.3% of the population was under the age of 18, while nearly a third of the population fell between the ages of 25-44. Nevertheless, the median age in Arcata was around twenty-six years old, a record high among Californians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For art enthusiasts, there are several things to do in Arcata. The town is known for its redwoods, and the university is located right in the middle of the city. Its many beaches are also convenient, so a trip to the city&#8217;s beach is a must! The residents of Arcata are extremely friendly and welcoming, and the city is growing by leaps and bounds every year. The weather is nice and the area is full of art and culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For an authentic taste of the city&#8217;s culture, visit the Artisans&#8217; cooperative gallery in downtown Arcata. This gallery represents dozens of local artists and craftspeople. Visitors can purchase original artwork in the form of ceramics, glass, and jewelry. There are also several galleries and museums that exhibit local art. In addition to the art scene, there are several local breweries that provide an ideal venue for music lovers. One can enjoy live music and other forms of entertainment in one of these venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several different types of restaurants in downtown Arcata. The Best Western is a cozy place to stay and offers comfortable rooms for travelers. The 3 foods cafe is located behind the Co-op and offers an eclectic menu of ethnic and international cuisines. Next to it, Live from New York offers pizzas and salads in huge slices.
