In 1848, the Western and Atlantic Railroad planned to build a railroad depot here. The railroad stopped here on the way between Chattanooga and Atlanta. It was the site of the town&#8217;s first depot, and the current one is a descendant of that building. Although the town was established before the 1850&#8217;s, the railroad depots were not. The railroad industry brought many spreadlines to the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town was founded on Land Lot 168, which contains 160 acres of the proposed district. The land was won by Hubbard Williams of Butts County in 1832 and granted to him on February 4, 1834. William Watts subsequently moved from Butts County to Cass County and founded Adairsville at its present location. The town is named for William Watts, who chose the prominent elevation known as Bowdoin&#8217;s Hill as the site of the first settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adairsville was the first town in Georgia to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town&#8217;s historic railroad depot was home to the steam locomotive &#8220;General&#8221; during the Civil War Great Locomotive Chase. The depot, which is now home to the Adairsville Welcome Center, was the town&#8217;s main hub. The city had a rich history and was the first Georgia town to be included in the National Register of Historic Places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The village of Adairsville is located in Cassville County, Georgia. It was created in 1840. The town was named after Scottish settler Chief John adair, who married a Cherokee Indian girl. The town&#8217;s early history revolved around the railroad. It was built on land directly in front of the Western and Atlantic Railroad.
