The name was inspired by Anne Curtis Bowman, the wife of early Fidalgo Island settler Amos Bowman. At the 2010 census, the city&#8217;s population was 15,774. The city&#8217;s growth has resulted in a diverse community of diverse interests and cultural values. The city is located on the southwest shore of Fidalgo Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the early 20th century, Anacortes was a union town, and some of its residents supported socialist activities. In the 1912 presidential election, the town&#8217;s first precinct voted for Eugene Debs. However, conditions were less favorable during the 1930s, and the Townsend Plan movement began to flourish. During this time, a town hall was opened and was the center of left-wing politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town&#8217;s historic downtown is lined with shops and restaurants. The McNaught Building, built in 1891, was moved to its present location on Commercial Avenue. Originally the Anacortes Mercantile Company, the building is now a luxury hotel and spa. The Majestic Inn and Spa has recently opened in the McNaught Building, and a second building is planned on the block. The city is home to the largest shopping mall in the Pacific Northwest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An important part of the city&#8217;s identity is its harbor. It is a popular place for boating and is home to the Cap Sante Boat Haven Marina. A 37-acre park is situated above the marina and is a popular day-use recreation area. A nature trail meanders through grassy stretches and passes glacial outcroppings. At the end, the view of Mount Erie and Baker is breathtaking. The town&#8217;s harbor features remnants of an ancient amphitheater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the summer, Anacortes is also home to several hiking trails. One of the most popular trails in the city is Sugarloaf Mountain, which has an elevation gain of 890 feet. Almost all of the hike is uphill and requires a good amount of water. The hike is worth it, but don&#8217;t be discouraged by the length of the trail. If you are not in the mood for a strenuous walk, there are a number of scenic overlooks you can see from the summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re planning a trip to Anacortes, keep safety in mind when visiting this town. The area is close to Seattle and the rainy weather of Seattle is rare. Despite the rainy season, however, it is important to pack a rain shell for your trip. Fortunately, this city&#8217;s climate is relatively mild and offers many options for outdoor activities. There are even a few hiking trails in the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another popular restaurant in the city is Rockfish Grill. Located in the Old Town district, this family-friendly restaurant offers Northwest cuisine and a full slate of craft beers. The Rockfish Grill has an extensive menu of local Northwest fare including seafood, as well as a full list of craft beers. The brewmasters of Anacortes&#8217; brewing companies will delight beer enthusiasts with their crafted ales.
