In the early days, the city was home to the Algonquian-speaking Choptank Indians, who were seeking equal access to housing, employment, and public facilities. In the years that followed, the city became the site of civil rights demonstrations. The Maryland National Guard was called in to protect the citizens of Cambridge, and during the protests in 1967, the police force was reorganized in four separate teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A unique aspect of Cambridge is its historical roots. It was the first settlement in the region and dates back to 1684. The town was once a seaport along the Choptank River, and is renowned for its maritime history. The fictional city Patamoke was based on the town, and many of the grand homes that line High Street date to the 1700s. Today, the historic downtown of Cambridge features a diverse selection of businesses, restaurants, and museums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Maryland &amp; Delaware Railroad is the only railroad that serves Cambridge, and it served as the western terminus of the Seaford Line, which connected Cambridge with Wilmington, Delaware. In May 2016, the M&amp;D suspended rail service following a series of derailments. The company cites safety concerns and other issues, but is currently operating. It has been open since 1895. However, the railroad is not able to resume services because of the recent occurrence of derailment incidents south of Hurlock, Maryland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When visiting the Cambridge waterfront, consider dining at Snappers Waterfront Cafe and Tiki Bar. The Caribbean and Maryland inspired cuisine served at the Tiki Bar is perfect for a summer day on the beach. The restaurant was founded by Laura and John Sydnor in 1994. They offer breakfast in the sand, as well as sandwiches and ice cream. The town&#8217;s historical markers include many references to slavery and are well worth visiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite being located on the Eastern Shore, Cambridge is also the oldest colonial town in Maryland. Its thriving arts and culture scene attracts visitors with their brick-paved streets and museums. The city also has a lighthouse on the water. While it isn&#8217;t known as a major tourist destination, Cambridge is a great place for a family vacation, a romantic getaway, or a day trip. The town has a variety of places to stay, from the beach to the city center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Located on the Eastern Shore, Cambridge is a charming, historic town. The city is a former Indian reservation. The town was named after the county and city in England that it was named after. The town also became an important stop on the Underground Railroad, where slaves were transported north.
