The town is a large center for commerce and is home to a number of colleges and universities. Historically, Cambridge was a small fishing community, but today the population is over 40,000. In fact, the city is home to one of the largest American Indian communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town was founded in 1684 by English colonists. While the Algonquian-speaking Choptank Indians still roamed the area, the English were able to settle in the area and begin farming. The largest plantations in the town were devoted to tobacco and mixed farming. Many of the planters brought in slaves from other countries in order to help them farm these crops. The town had a pier where slaves were traded. Today, the town has several historical markers and a riverfront park that is ideal for a walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another place of interest is the Choptank River Lighthouse, which is located on High Street in Cambridge. It is a replica of a six-sided screw-pile lighthouse that guided mariners along the Choptank River for generations. Visitors can tour the lighthouse for free during the mid-May through October period. In addition, the city is home to several historic buildings and museums, including the renowned Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The historic Christ Episcopal Church and Cemetery is a must-see for tourists in the area. Built by Baltimore architect Charles E. Cassell in 1840, the building is a beautiful example of the Gothic Revival style. The Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features monuments to five former governors of Maryland. The parish offers tours and weekly services. This picturesque town is a great place for a family getaway or for a romantic weekend with a special someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a romantic getaway, Cambridge is a beautiful place to stay. The town is a quaint and picturesque town and offers a variety of multi-family and large-group accommodations. The region has nearly 1,700 miles of shoreline. The town&#8217;s waterfront is ideal for fishing. The Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is a popular destination for families. There are many other attractions and restaurants in the area. Some of them require advance reservations, so make sure you check ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For history buffs, a trip to Cambridge would not be complete without a visit to the Harriet Tubman Museum. It is a charming museum dedicated to the famous Underground Railroad conductor. This exhibit is part of a self-guided tour of more than 30 sites.
