Jack Robinson, Muddy Waters, and Tennessee Williams are all from the area. Radio personality Early Wright, who hosted WROX (AM) from 1945 to 1998, was a native of Clarksdale. In 1998, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant released a CD titled &#8220;Walking Into a Stranger&#8217;s House.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first people to migrate to the Delta region were the African Americans. The soil was ideal for growing cotton. Several plantations were established in the area and Clarksdale earned the title of &#8220;The Golden Buckle of the Cotton Belt&#8221;. In 1848, John Clark founded the town. He was the brother-in-law of James Lusk Alcorn, who owned a plantation close to the town. The former governor and senator, Freeman narrated the documentary The Promised Land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1848, white settlers began moving to the Delta region. The rich soil was ideal for growing cotton. This led to several plantations being established in the area and the city earned the title of &#8220;Golden Buckle&#8221; of the Cotton Belt. The city was founded by John Clark, a man who lived near a plantation owned by James Lusk Alcorn. He later became a senator and governor. The Black population increased and the price of cotton dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before European settlers arrived in the area, Clarksdale was home to many different ethnic groups. In the early twentieth century, residents included people with Chinese, Italian, and Lebanese ancestry. The population of white settlers was made up of white plantation owners and African American farm laborers. In the 1970s, a Jewish community was established. The majority of the community was made up of immigrants from Eastern Europe. The Jewish people of the area still live in Clarksdale today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city&#8217;s history goes back to the early nineteenth century. The cotton trade made Clarksdale a prosperous town. The townspeople worked on the plantations, including slaves. In 1848, the city was named after John Clark, a timber businessman who later married the sister of James Lusk Alcorn, a prominent planter and politician. The cotton industry fueled the community&#8217;s growth and the town soon gained the title of &#8220;Golden Buckle on the Cotton Belt.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city&#8217;s rich history can be traced to its history as a southern Mississippi Delta town. The city is located on the banks of the Sunflower River and is a popular destination for tourists and locals. The population of Clarksdale is 20.63 per square mile, with 0.07% of the land area water. Its historical significance is undisputed. The city is home to many historic buildings.
