It is part of the Medway unitary authority, and lies in South East England. It is home to a thriving arts and culture community. The city is an excellent place to live, work, and study. There are plenty of places to visit in the area, and residents can find just about any type of accommodation and activity. It is located within the Medway district, which includes the town of Ramsgate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many reasons to visit Chatham. The town is a major royal navy station, and the city has an impressive arsenal. This former munitions depot houses an extensive collection of stores and barracks. During the medieval period, Chatham was fortified with palisades and ramparts, and by the mid-17th century, a forty-ton barge was able to navigate the River Medway. Today, Chatham is primarily a tourist destination, with many yacht moorings on the waterfront.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chatham Naval Memorial commemorates the men and women who lost their lives in the Great War. This memorial stands on the Great Lines, an escarpment ridge that separates Chatham from Gillingham. The town was home to the first Baptist chapel in north Kent, the Zion Baptist Chapel in Clover Street. In the 1660s, Edward Morecock settled in Chatham. He was a sea-captain during the time of Cromwell, and was injured in battle. He eventually settled in the Zion Baptist Chapel and was able to continue to grow in the area. In the seventeenth century, Ebenezer Chapel was built in Chatham, and was the first of its kind in the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town&#8217;s history is rich in culture. The Royal Navy built a dockyard in the town during the 17th century, and built new buildings and bridges to transport goods. This dockyard is now part of a historic trust, and is now open to the public. It is said that the first Baptist chapel in north Kent was located here. In 1662, a sea-captain named Edward Morecock settled in the town and opened the Zion Baptist Chapel. The church was founded in 1700, and was a prominent religious center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many important institutions and programs in Chatham that support the community. A number of local newspapers serve the area. The Medway News, Medway Standard, and Messenger are owned by the KM Group. The university also has a community radio station, called the Sunlight. It is home to several other organizations, including the Pennsylvania Center for Women and Politics. The University&#8217;s Women&#8217;s Institute brings together a wide variety of resources and initiatives focused on gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the many projects in Chatham is Words Without Walls, a partnership between the university&#8217;s MFA program and the State Correctional Institution Pittsburgh. The community is involved in a number of other activities, including the Chatham MFA creative writing program. It also has a Center for Women&#8217;s Entrepreneurship. It fosters economic opportunities for women and promotes women&#8217;s leadership through education.
