Ski slopes and Nordic skiing courses are available at the town&#8217;s downhill ski resort. A scenic and historic byway, the West Elk Loop, takes visitors to surrounding wilderness areas. Fall foliage in this part of the state is known for the vibrant colors of the Quaking aspen trees. The downtown area, Elk Avenue, has numerous shops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you fly into Crested Butte, take the elevation map. You can drive up to 11,312 feet above sea level on Hwy 135 and then head south toward the town of Gunnison. Once in Crested Butte, you can follow the Taylor River up a narrow canyon and explore the high meadows of the surrounding mountains. The town is located on the east side of the mountains and is an excellent base for hiking, biking, or horseback riding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;d rather stay a little longer, Crested Butte&#8217;s historic downtown will give you the opportunity to do some shopping, take a scenic drive, and enjoy a few delicious meals. After a day of fun in the snow, head to the bars and restaurants in downtown. You&#8217;ll probably make some friends and hear some great stories along the way. Just be sure to pack a camera and a binoculars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you like to drink your rum, head to Crested Butte Distillers. There you can taste both Platino Light Rum and Oro Dark Rum. The local owner, Karen Hoskin, is an environmentalist and a former environmental activist. The rums are made from only American ingredients and have won many awards. The rum can be found in over 34 states. At the Montanya Distillers&#8217; tasting room, you can sample some of the unique scotch cocktails and enjoy snacks and live music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While you&#8217;ll be in Crested Butte, you can also explore the surrounding area. The mountainous area of the town makes it a great location for mountain biking, hiking, and skiing. For those who love to explore on foot, the town&#8217;s historic downtown is a popular spot for sightseeing. During the spring and summer, there are several other outdoor activities in the region, including ice climbing, snowshoeing, and sledding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can visit the Crested Butte Mountain Resort, which is located just two miles from the town center. You can find many lodging options at the Crested Butte Mountain Resort, including the Lodge at the Mountaineer Square, and a number of hotels and motels. The Lodge at Mountaineer Square offers an extensive beer list, as well as cocktails and wine. While you&#8217;re there, you can also dine at the Wooden Nickel, an old-fashioned saloon that has been operating since 1929. Its menu is full of great flavors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can hike in the park to enjoy the mountain views. If you&#8217;re into hiking, you&#8217;ll find numerous hiking trails and a great view of the town. It&#8217;s also a popular place for photographers and painters, so you&#8217;ll want to take the time to capture the scenery. Remember to stay on public land; picking wildflowers is illegal.
