Eatonton is the county seat of Putnam County and has a population of 6,307 people. The city was named after William Eaton, an officer and diplomat in the First Barbary War. The name consists of Eaton’s surname with the English suffix “ton,” which means “town.” This is one of the oldest settlements in the United States. It is located along the western side of the state’s Piedmont plateau.

The city is home to several interesting sites. North of the city is the Rock Eagle Effigy Mound, one of only two Native American archaeological sites east of the Mississippi River. These are carved rock effigies of Woodland culture peoples and are part of a 1500-acre park administered by the University of Georgia. This park also has a 4-H camp nearby. In addition to historical sites, Eatonton is home to several parks and historic sites.

Another popular attraction in Eatonton is the Putnam County Veterans Wall of Honor Park. This park has six walls and more than 1500 bricks engraved with the names of local veterans. This memorial park is a great place to pay homage to the area’s veterans. In addition to its numerous historical landmarks, Eatonton Georgia also features several interesting historical sites and a charming downtown. And if you happen to be a history buff, you’ll enjoy the town’s colorful statue of Brer Rabbit, which is situated on the courthouse lawn.
