The town&#8217;s annual festival is held on the third Saturday of July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town&#8217;s first sawmill was built by Edward Gilman, who died in 1653. His family remained successful as shipbuilders and merchants. Their grandson, John Gilman, served in a number of positions in the city and had ninety-four grandchildren. His presence in the community helped the town repopulate, and other families began to settle in the area. The town was founded in the early 1700s by French settlers who established an important wilderness settlement with no support from the British or royal merchants. The settlers of Exeter were proud of their accomplishments and even the French and Indians did not attack their town. The founding fathers of the town had the fortitude to take on any challenge. Its founders did not fear the British, and they successfully protected the rights of the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A thriving Black community inhabited Exeter until the early 1700s. At the time, the town had an estimated 81 free Blacks in fourteen households and two enslaved Blacks. This was the highest percentage of Black people in the state, at 4.7%. The town was home to the first public library in the state. In 1887, the town also adopted a temperance ordinance.
