Its population was 14,306 in the 2010 census, and is projected to grow to 16,049 by the 2020 census. Until 1997, the town was the county seat, but it was moved to neighboring Brentwood. If you&#8217;re interested in moving to New England, Exeter is a great place to start your search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town of Exeter incorporated as a village in 1797 and had a town meeting in 1807. In 1847, the town meeting voted to add a high school, and in 1865, William Robinson left money to establish the Robinson Female Seminary, which opened in 1867. In 1867, the schools were separated by sex, with boys and girls attending the fifth through the twelfth grades. In 1887, the population of Exeter increased from 40 to 320. There were two dormitories, and most students boarded in Exeter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early years of Exeter, there were no town officers. The town was governed by a town meeting\/selectmen form of government. The council of selectmen, who opted to incorporate the town, still has three or five members. In addition to the three or five selectmen, the town has also had a town manager, who is an assistant to the selectmen. It has never been incorporated, but the town&#8217;s municipal structure has remained relatively unchanged since 1740. In the past, the town clerk was the tax collector until 1986. During the Civil War, men were elected to serve as constables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically, the town had many problems. In 1887, there were problems in paying taxes, building new town buildings, and buying new fire engines. The temperance issue was often discussed, and in the nineteenth century, Exeter town meetings passed temperance measures. In 1812, a bill restricting the sale of spirituous liquors in the town&#8217;s shops was passed by the town meeting. In 1838, another ordinance limited the sale of spirituous spirits to one apothecary and allowed them to be used for medicinal purposes or as art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A city with a vibrant culture of historical and cultural events, Exeter is a popular place for families. Visitors and residents will appreciate the historical importance of the town. A few noteworthy historical facts about the city include its history as a provincial capital and its history during the American Revolution. Moreover, the city&#8217;s rich heritage is evident in its historic landmarks. Attractive and picturesque downtown, the town is a popular destination for vacationing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early years of the town, the settlers struggled to survive in the New Hampshire wilderness. They had no money and no support from outsiders. The animus from the Massachusetts colonists was particularly fierce. Soon after arriving in Exeter, Wheelwright founded a church and wrote the first Exeter Combination, which was signed by 35 freemen on July 4, 1639. The combination was a declaration of independence for the town and declared that the townspeople wanted to have their own government. The elders of the town served as their legislative body.
