The population of Exeter was 16,049 at the 2010 census and was 14,306 at the 2000 census. The town was the county seat until 1997 when county offices were moved to neighboring Brentwood. The town is known for its historic architecture and small-town charm. There are many restaurants and coffee shops in Exeter. There are several local colleges and universities. The town is also known for its summer festivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first European settlement in New Hampshire was in the town of Exeter. It was originally named Squamscott and given its name by the Exeter Combination. This riverside location made it a major shipbuilding and trading center. The charter also included the towns of Epping, Brentwood, and Newmarket. The Lincoln Memorial and American Independence Museum are located in Exeter. Several historic sites are in the town. There are many historic homes and buildings to explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city&#8217;s golden years lasted from 1774 to 1788, when Exeter hosted both national and international events. Here, the state&#8217;s first written constitution and declaration of independence from Great Britain were signed. The state&#8217;s government continued to meet in the old townhouse until 1782, when it was moved to Concord. However, Exeter remained the state capital until 1818, when the town was incorporated. When the state legislature wasn&#8217;t in session, the committee of safety met in the old townhouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the New Hampshire primary season, Exeter is one of the state&#8217;s most popular locations for presidential candidates. The Swasey Pavilion in Exeter town square is a favorite among many political activists. It has been the home to numerous famous politicians and celebrities. While the U.S. Air Force admitted that it was unable to identify the object, the sighting remains a remarkable event in UFO history. And, despite its small size, it has remained a quaint, historic city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1680, Exeter became the county seat and was home to many notable people. The town&#8217;s population grew rapidly and by the year 1680, it had grown to around 9,000 residents. The city&#8217;s church was enlarged and three galleries were added. The city&#8217;s town records are missing from 1682 to 1689. The records from the eighties and early nineties are mainly about land allotments. The town&#8217;s population was approximately 1430 in the 2010 census.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town of Exeter is situated around the Exeter River Falls, where the freshwater waters of the Devon River meet the saltwater Squamscott River. Although the town&#8217;s location is not by chance, this town&#8217;s early settlement was very important to the region&#8217;s economy. It was important for shipping goods, but the water-powered generator at McReel Docks closed in the 1950s.
