Its location makes it an ideal destination for vacations, and the area is popular with residents and visitors. Getting to Gig Harbor is simple, as there are several hotels, restaurants, and attractions within the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For shopping, Gig Harbor has numerous unique and fun souvenir shops. One such place is the Austin and Ericksen Sawmill, which was closed for renovations in 2013. Today, the Beach Basket Gift Shops are comprised of 2 buildings, each containing an array of unique gifts. During the holidays, it is worth visiting the 3-story Christmas shop, which has many unique gifts for every occasion. During the summer, you can also visit the Sample Sale, which happens about a dozen times a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gig Harbor is home to a vibrant arts and culture scene, with plenty of activities to keep you busy. There are several independent artists selling art and crafts in the area. Each one works on quality products, and each purchase puts money in the artist&#8217;s pocket. A few of these artists even have their own websites. These local talents provide an incredible experience in Gig Harbor. It is the perfect place to pick up a unique gift and get some inspiration for your next vacation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gig Harbor waterfront is lined with parks, and there are several to choose from. A large park called Sehmel Homestead Park is located near the center of town. There are also nearby state parks, such as Kopachuck State Park and Penrose Point State Park, which offer a variety of activities for all tastes. For those looking to relax on the beach, Gig Harbor is the perfect place to do so. The city is also an excellent destination for outdoor enthusiasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gig Harbor was an important port during the Civil War. Farmers and fishermen depended on boats to transport their goods. Fortunately, steamboats became popular, and in 1903, Emmett Hunt began building small steamboats to sell in the area. Soon, he was part of the &#8220;Mosquito Fleet&#8221; of vessels in the Puget Sound, and he grew to be the leader of the steamboat industry in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides its historic sites, Gig Harbor is also home to many museums. The Harbor History Museum, a 14500 square-foot museum located downtown, features a range of exhibits on regional history. Its collection includes a restored one-room school house, a 65-foot fishing boat, a 900-square-foot library, and 7,000 square feet of exhibition space. Upon completion, the museum won the Washington Historical Association&#8217;s Award of Project Excellence and was the first public museum in the state.
