In the early nineteenth century, the Fort Davis garrison was active, patrolling the frontier town and guarding mail relay stations. It escorted mail and freight trains, and fought occasional skirmishes with Indians. Although Fort Davis troops made little progress in pacifying the Indians, their presence boosted the town’s economic activities and reputation. During the 1880s, the town became an important cattle ranching center. Thousands of ambitious cattlemen flocked to the Trans-Pecos. Many sought refuge from Texas fever, and the Fort Davis garrison remained in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are many historic buildings in Fort Davis, including the renowned Historic Indian Lodge. The buildings have been lovingly restored and are now maintained by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The historic inn has an antique-filled dining room and a sheltered veranda.
