You can enjoy a hamburger steak or a delicious piece of seared salmon for lunch or dinner, and the local Big Bend Roaster coffee is worth trying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the late 1800s, an army experimental corps lumbered into Fort Davis, Texas, en route to Fort Tejon, California. In 1857, E. P. Webster, a native of Illinois, and Diedrick Dutchover, a Belgian immigrant, escorted the first mail coach to El Paso. They stayed in Limpia Canyon as the first master of the stage station. Then in 1859, Texas military authorities used Camp Verde animals, but camels were found to be superior to mules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more than a century, Fort Davis has served as an important defense post for the southwest. From 1854 to 1891, its troops protected travelers, mail coaches, and freighters traveling the San Antonio-El Paso Road. The site was designated a National Historic Site in 1961.
