The original purpose was to provide a memorial to veterans of New Hampshire and other allied states. The state of New Hampshire worked with the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests to buy the land, and the New Hampshire Federation of Women&#8217;s Clubs was heavily involved in the campaign. This was a major achievement for the park, and it will always remain a treasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hikers who wish to take a hike in the area will be happy to hear that the AMC hut is located just a short drive from the town. From there, they can choose between two popular trails &#8211; the Cannon Mountain and Lonesome Lake hike. This famous rock formation was discovered in 1805 and has been the official state symbol of New Hampshire for over a century.
