By the end of the nineteenth century, several lumber mills sat along the Sampit River. The Atlantic Coast Lumber Company was the largest mill in the Eastern United States at the time. In 2021, Georgetown voters elected a Republican majority on its city council. In January 2022, Carol Jayroe became the city&#8217;s first woman mayor and the first Republican mayor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town&#8217;s history is rich and diverse. Its founding is rich in history, with the founding of the state in 1734. It was also a vital port for supplies to General Nathaniel Greene&#8217;s army.
