It will take you down the Merrimack River and to the Parker River Wildlife Sanctuary. Once you arrive in Newburyport, turn right onto Rt. 1A and follow it until you reach the end of the paved road, where the Hellcat parking lot is located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The towns of Ipswich, Newburyport, and Plum Island lie along the coast of Cape Ann, which stretches almost to the New Hampshire border. The unspoiled beaches and wildlife sanctuaries make this area a favorite for nature lovers. You can even spend the day at the beach and go swimming in the bay! If you want to spend a day out on the water, check out the local attractions in Ipswich, Newburyport, and Plum Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visitors to Ipswich should visit the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, which is more than four thousand acres and home to more than 300 species of birds. On the far southern tip of Plum Island, you can also visit Sandy Point State Reservation, which is located across from Cranes Beach in Ipswich. A popular trail here is the Hellcat Interpretive Trail. However, the refuge is closed during certain times during the breeding season of the Piping Plover, so be sure to check before visiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town&#8217;s history is steeped in history. The Town of Newbury built a house on Plum Island in 1752. Later, the federal government funded the construction of a lighthouse at Plum Island, replacing beacons on the island that were first used in the 1780s. The lighthouse is still active and maintained by the Friends of Plum Island Light, Inc. Until the war, lighthouses were maintained by local lighthouse keepers. After the war, the Federal government took over the lighthouses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early seventeenth century, Plum Island was a large unnamed island north of Cape Ann. It was named after a land grant that the governing council of the Plymouth Colony gave to Captain John Mason, governor of New Newfoundland. Soon after, settlers of the town of Ipswich began to use the island&#8217;s resources. They used salt marsh hay and wood from the island to build homes and shelters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Plum Island Hotel was an important landmark in the town&#8217;s history. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was a popular resort. Many large hotels operated there. Today, Plum Island has many options for tourists including rental cottages and bed and breakfasts. The town&#8217;s population is primarily year-round.
