The party machine led by Tom Pendergast rose to prominence, and eventually, Harry S. Truman was elected President of the United States. In 1928, the Republican National Convention was held in Kansas City, and it was held in the state&#8217;s biggest arena. The Republican candidate, Herbert Hoover, was from Iowa. The city&#8217;s sleazy political machine made the city&#8217;s political power base vulnerable to a presidential candidate from another state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kansas City area has a diverse public transportation system. The Metro Area Express, or MAX, system is a bus line that starts in the City Market and goes south to the Plaza and southern Kansas. The MAX bus was originally supposed to extend green traffic lights, but this feature has not yet been implemented. It is still the largest public transit system in the country. In 1897, the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority introduced the first public street car service in the area.
