It was named for Kanab Creek and was founded in 1864. The fort was built to protect the city from Indian attacks and serve as a base for exploring the area. In 1866, Indian attacks forced the fort to be abandoned. In 1870, ten Mormon families settled in the fort, and Brigham Young visited the area twice. The city is located between two natural wonders &#8211; the Great Salt Lake and the Vermilion Cliffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city of Kanab is surrounded by diverse geologic scenery, including volcanoes, lava flows, deep canyons, and lush plains. It&#8217;s also close to Grand Canyon National Parks and other colorful state parks. Because of its proximity to many national and state parks, this small town makes for an ideal base camp for extended vacations. If you&#8217;re planning an extended stay, Kanab Utah is the perfect destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While visiting the town, you&#8217;ll want to do some hiking in the slot canyons. The area is home to five national monuments and two state parks. You can also check out the natural animal sanctuary, or take scenic drives through the desert. The slot canyons of Kanab are the main attractions of the area, with a fifteen-mile long stretch known as Buckskin Gulch. The park is open to off-road vehicles and is home to the infamous Coral Pink Sand Dunes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can dine on traditional American and European food. The town&#8217;s main street, Highway 89, is lined with many cozy hotels and motels. You can choose to stay in one of the restored historic motels that sit along the highway. The Flagstone Boutique Inn &amp; Suites dates back to 1940, and has 21 spacious suites with full kitchens. The Peekaboo Canyon Wood Fired Kitchen is located on the grounds of the hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kaibab Plateau is another must-see spot in Kanab. It&#8217;s part of the Grand Staircase, which starts in Bryce Canyon and runs northward from there. It is seven miles north of the city. If you plan to visit, you&#8217;ll be surprised at how much you can see of this beautiful landscape from the town itself. It&#8217;s an impressive sight to behold. And don&#8217;t forget to take in the southwestern Utah scenery while you&#8217;re in town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The small town of Heber is another must-see when in Kanab. It offers prime views of the Wasatch Mountains and a traditional Wild West way of life. It even has a preserved historic steam locomotive, which tourists can ride. This charming town also has a thriving country music scene and offers plenty of opportunities for skiing, swimming, and lakeside relaxation on Deer Creek Reservoir. So whether you&#8217;re looking for a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city, Kanab is an ideal destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visiting Zion Canyon is also a must-do while in Kanab. Visitors can take on the iconic hikes of Angels Landing and The Narrows. However, some trails in Zion are closed due to toxic bloom in the Virgin River. Another popular destination in the area is Bryce Canyon National Park, which has the largest concentration of hoodoos on Earth.
