Silver salmon come in late August and are plentiful in the spring and summer. Silver salmon can be caught into September if they feed on baitfish. Sockeye and Chum salmon are also common in Kodiak. You can go hiking on the islands in Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, which contains seven major rivers and around 100 streams. It is an important habitat for Pacific Ocean salmon and serves as a breeding ground for more than 250 species of birds. Six native animal species live in Kodiak. In the 1920s, the first people to bring these animals to the islands were the Sitka deer, mountain goats, and beavers.
