This town was an important trading point for different tribes in the region. In fact, Paleo-Indians hunted bison on the plains in the region around ten thousand years ago. Interestingly, there is an archaeological site nearby where nearly two hundred bison were killed. Bison bones and projectile points were found along with the bodies. In addition, the Plains Woodlands culture influenced the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an important transportation hub, La Junta is known for its railroad history. The Santa Fe Railroad built a depot in 1875, and the town was soon the headquarters of the Colorado division. In 1881, the city was incorporated under state laws. The railroad was a major source of transportation for produce and cattle. The railroad&#8217;s presence in the area made it a prime location for cattle and melon shipments. In 1833, the Bent Brothers built a fort along the Arkansas River, intended to serve the trade in buffalo robes.
