There are numerous lakes and rivers where you can catch salmon, cod, and trout. You can see Bald Eagles perched high in the mountains, or watch Kodiak Grizzlies scurrying up the river near town. Mountain Goats and Sitka Deer can be seen as well. Buffalo roam the grasslands like cattle. Whether you want to enjoy wildlife or simply observe the scenery, you&#8217;re sure to be delighted by the diversity of wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city of Kodiak was once a struggling fishing port until World War II turned it into a staging area for North Pacific operations. Soon, the population topped 25,000. Fort Abercrombie, a military base, was built to protect the naval base. Today, it&#8217;s home to the largest Coast Guard base in the United States. When you visit Kodiak, make sure to stop by this historical site!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also get out and explore the island on bike. The gravel roads on Kodiak are made for biking. Anton Larsen Bay Road, for example, is 12 miles long and starts at Buskin River Campground. It heads northwest and ends at Anton Larsen Bay on the west side. You can rent a bike at local shops.
