You can pick up free paper maps from tourist centers. To avoid the chaos of Spring Break, plan your trip for a time when most of the town&#8217;s residents are off school. Spring break typically happens between March and April. In any case, you can expect the usual college students merriment. There are plenty of opportunities to see the vibrant nightlife and historic sites of Key West without having to spend your vacation days surrounded by drunk college students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re into history, you may want to visit Ernest Hemingway&#8217;s house, which he owned from 1931 to his death. The house is beautifully preserved and contains many original items that the writer left behind. There&#8217;s also an outdoor garden where you can stroll and enjoy the sunset. You&#8217;ll also find plenty of great restaurants, boutique shops, and live entertainment. Just be aware that the Old Town area can get very busy during the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to enjoy the sun and surf, Key West is the southernmost city in the contiguous U.S., although Hawaii is farther south. It sits along the Florida Straits, a coral reef that extends from the Dry Tortugas National Park to Miami. The coral reef is the third largest in the world. Key West is also the southern terminus of Route 1, which runs from Miami to the Canadian border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Duval Street runs through the center of the island, dotted with Victorian mansions, souvenir shops, and some of the most delicious restaurants in Key West. Famous for hosting the annual Hemingway look-alike contest, the Sloppy Joe&#8217;s is a place where you can get a good meal and a great rum drink. The street has everything you could want, from art galleries to boutiques. So, get your camera ready!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from the colorful buoy that marks the southernmost point in the continental U.S., the city also has a painted buoy statue. The brightly colored buoy was originally a wooden sign that was removed during the hurricanes that hit the region. Since then, it has survived hurricanes and is now an iconic icon of Key West. The line to see it, however, is ridiculously long at most times of the day and isn&#8217;t worth the wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lighthouse is another important landmark in Key West. Its tower stretches 73 feet, and its colorful exterior stands out in the green scenery. The lighthouse&#8217;s original keeper, Barbara Mabrity, maintained the lighthouse, which was essential to the safety of ships at sea. Today, visitors can climb the 88-step tower to see the working light.
