In the mid-1800s, Jacksonville was a gold mining boomtown, but after the Great Depression it was a forgotten backwater. But today, more than 80 buildings still stand, and the town has been restored to reflect the appearance of the late 19th century. The town got its name from a gold rush in the 1850s, and it prospered as a center of commerce for more than 30 years before it met its bust. During this time, many businesses closed, but many of the historic buildings remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historic Chinatown. Jacksonville was home to the first Chinatown in Oregon, founded by Chinese immigrants from San Francisco. Archeologists recently uncovered evidence of a Chinese community dating back to the 1850s. The discovery led to the halting of construction work while archeologists conducted four-day rescue excavations. The archeologists found broken Chinese bowls, handmade bottles, and opium paraphernalia. In addition, they found Chinese coins, a rare and precious artifact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States and the bluest in the world. It’s located 81 miles from Jacksonville Inn. If you’re traveling from Jacksonville, you can take the Redwood Highway to Grants Pass and experience the famed Rogue and Umpqua rivers. The Klamath Basin offers world-class birding. Jacksonville is also the site of Oregon’s gold rush and is listed as a National Historic Landmark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudia Felt, a native of Caldwell, graduated from Caldwell High School and later worked for the Arctic Circle Drive Inn and Boise Cascade hotels. Later, she moved to Twin Falls, Idaho and then finally to Medford, Oregon. After working at Southern Oregon Orthopedics, she opened the Sandpiper Restaurant. She had many friends here over the last 29 years. Claudia enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two cities are home to the Applegate AMA, a 324,680-acre tract that is part of the Applegate watershed. More than thirty percent of the region’s land is privately owned. Other areas are managed by the Rogue River National Forest and the Medford District of the Bureau of Land Management. During the late 1980s, the Applegate Watershed became an international model forest. This region has become a thriving center for sustainable practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other notable graduates include Helen Martha Cobbledick, Mary Catherine Mullins, and Verna France Lindblad. They studied music and teaching in the same high school. They were also teachers in Oakland, Calif. They later returned to college and earned their M.A. and M.E. degrees. Some of them also returned to the classroom after completing the program.
