It was situated on the Arkansas River, which was once the international boundary between Mexico and the United States. This small town was home to Native American tribes, including the Arapaho and the Cheyenne. In 1833, two Frenchmen, Charles and William Bent, established a fort along the river as a trading post for the local Native Americans. Over time, the fort grew to become the largest outpost in the Southwest and was the last stop before entering Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city is home to a municipal golf course, which offers nine holes of scenic golf.
