Several good museums can also be found in the Kansas City area. The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art is one such museum. Another one is the Arabia Steamboat Museum. Finally, you can visit the Toy and Miniature Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are looking for hiking trails, you might want to head over to the Lakeside Nature Center. This 1.2-mile trail offers spectacular views of Lake Jacomo. Hikers of all levels can take advantage of the trail&#8217;s many attractions. Enjoy the fresh air, waterfront views, and local bird species. You can enjoy your hike from dawn to dusk. You can also hike the Fox Hollow Trail, which is a hidden forest gem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tornadoes are a regular occurrence in the area. Since Kansas City is located within Tornado Alley, cold air from Canada collides with warm air from the Gulf of Mexico to form powerful storms. Several large tornado outbreaks have affected the Kansas City area, including the 1957 tornado in Ruskin Heights, and a series of storms in May 2003. Winter months are also fraught with ice storms, which can cause hundreds of thousands of people to lose their power. Flooding is also common in Kansas City and outlying areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The weather in Kansas City is moderately humid. A high of 100 degrees Fahrenheit can be reached on five days in August and 47 days in January. During the winter months, the city experiences a cold climate, with an average low of 32 degrees Fahrenheit. During this time, the humidity in the air is particularly high. In addition to the hot weather, Kansas City also experiences cold winters. Temperatures do not fall below 32 degrees Fahrenheit for two to three weeks out of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sports scene in Kansas City has a rich and varied history. The City had four major league baseball teams in the 1880s, including the Kansas City Unions in the Union Association. The Cowboys were part of the National League in 1886 and the American Association in 1889. In 1914 and 1915, the Packers were part of the Federal League, while the Monarchs were part of the now-defunct Negro National and Negro American Leagues. During this time, Kansas City also had several minor league baseball teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Civil War, the Kansas City area was the scene of intensive military activity. The First Battle of Independence, fought on September 11, 1861, resulted in a Confederate victory. After the Battle of Independence, Union forces occupied the city and fortified its neighborhoods. Later, on October 21-22, the Second Battle of Independence occurred as part of General Sterling Price&#8217;s Missouri expedition.
