Native American roots run deep in the town. English colonists first settled Mashpee in 1658. In 1665, the Wampanoag were allowed to stay in the settlement and established a court of law, and trials were held according to English customs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town&#8217;s central commons has become a popular spot for shopping and entertainment. The town&#8217;s commons is home to more than a hundred shops, including a movie theater, libraries, and offices. You can even find restaurants, galleries, and bowling alleys here. As a bonus, the town is home to a variety of exciting events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1861, the Mashpee Wampanoag led a peaceful protest against European-Americans, whom they considered to have failed in their attempts to establish self-government. In response, European-American officials appointed a committee of five European-Americans, including Pequot Methodist preacher William Apess, to make decisions for the town.
