15 Best things to Do in Los Alamos New Mexico

May 11, 2022 | More: Los Alamos New Mexico| Things to Do

When in Los Alamos, NM, be sure to take a stroll through the town’s many scenic spots, including the White Rock Overlook. Located just feet from the town’s parking area, this scenic spot offers a view of the Rio Grande. If you’re a nature lover, this is the place for you. There are many interactive educational displays and great views of the surrounding canyons and mesas. The center is operated by the Pajarito Environmental Education Center and holds events to introduce people to the natural elements of the area. Admission is free.

Besides the National Laboratory, Los Alamos also has plenty of attractions for visitors to explore. Visitors can explore the Bandelier National Monument, which contains ancient Puebloan ruins. If you’re interested in history, you can take a tour of the historic facilities. The city has plenty of outdoor activities for people of all ages. You can also visit the Bradbury Science Center, where you can learn about the Manhattan Project.

There are several places to grab a bite to eat. While you’re exploring the town, be sure to stop at one of the local breweries for a delicious beer. Bathtub Row Brewery Co-Op is named for the nine buildings that were constructed in Los Alamos during World War II. If you’re not into drinking beer, you can sample some local wines and beer while dining at Blue Window Bistro.

While visiting Los Alamos, you can visit the Los-Alamos History Museum. The museum details the Manhattan Project and how the original nuclear weapon was created. You’ll also learn about the effects of the Cold War and the history of the town’s development. A movie and educational exhibit about life-changing research related to the Manhattan Project are also available for viewing. There are also several other cultural institutions in the town. The museums and the historical society are an excellent choice for a day trip from Los Alamos.

If you enjoy mountain biking, hiking, or simply admiring nature, you can explore the nearby National Parks. The most popular national park site in Los Alamos is Bandelier National Monument, a 33,677-acre park that preserves the history of Ancestral Puebloans. The Alcove House is a cultural snapshot of the area. The Main Loop Trail leads to a cave and wooden ladders.

You can also explore Los Alamos’ history by visiting the Taos Pueblo. This centuries-old Indian community was founded around 1000 A.D., and the main portion of the structures still look like they did when Spanish explorers arrived in 1540. These buildings are considered the oldest continuously inhabited structures in the United States. And since the Pueblo is located in a rural area, it’s possible to go hiking or horseback riding in the nearby mountains.

Besides visiting the National Park, you should also visit Petroglyph National Monument. This natural area is filled with beautiful sights. There are hundreds of archaeological sites to explore, as well as over 24,000 images carved into the sand by ancient Pueblo people. The images tell stories about their carvers. While you’re in Los Alamos, you can also take part in a number of fun activities. If you’re visiting from another state, make sure to plan a trip to this site while you’re in the area.
