15 Classic Souvenirs from Los Alamos New Mexico

May 11, 2022 | More: Los Alamos New Mexico| Souvenirs

When visiting Los Alamos New Mexico, take a look at these fun facts about the city. There are many family-friendly activities to keep your kids occupied. Admission to the Los Alamos Nature Center is free, and the grounds feature demonstration gardens, mud kitchens, nature play areas, and even a planetarium. There is something for everyone in the community to enjoy, so make sure to take advantage of everything Los Alamos has to offer.

The first resident of Los Alamos was a woman named Dorothy Scarritt McKibbin. She was responsible for dispatching 65 people each day to the site and overseeing all aspects of life in Los Alamos. Her office was often described as a “bedlam” as she was responsible for issuing passes and helping newcomers find their way around the village. She also handled personal matters and received shipments of household items, such as clothing.

The town of Los Alamos is the county seat of Los Alamos County, and one of the two census-designated places in the area. The town is nestled between four mesas of the Pajarito Plateau and the White Rock Canyon. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, Los Alamos is home to the Los Alamos National Laboratory, which was established during World War II to conduct experiments for the Manhattan Project. In the townsite, many county offices are located.

The town’s Manhattan Project National Historic Park was established in November 2015, but some properties aren’t open to the public. The park also includes some downtown properties, including the homes of key scientists. The Manhattan Project National Historical Park is one of three national parks that include sites in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and Hanford, Washington. Visiting the town’s Manhattan Project National Historical Park also includes the Manhattan Project Museum. In addition to a tour route that includes homes of scientists, visitors can also visit the Los Alamos History Museum located in the town’s 1918 infirmary. The infirmary served as guest quarters during the Manhattan Project.
