A number of important people have a connection to Tacoma, Washington. A group of abolitionists and freethinkers founded Tacoma in 1832 and built a railroad. Job Carr, an abolitionist who later became a Union Army officer, settled in the area in the 1830s. He was wounded during the Civil War and left for Indiana and Iowa, eventually settling in Tacoma. In 1864, the government authorized the construction of the railroad to the Pacific Northwest. Job Carr sold his land and migrated to Tacoma, Washington. He lived in a cedar bark shelter with his cat.
