15 Tourist Attractions in Falmouth and Woods Hole Massachusetts

April 11, 2022 | More: Falmouth and Woods Hole Massachusetts| Tourist Attractions

If you’re looking for something fun to do on your vacation, Falmouth and Woods Hole are the perfect spots. You’ll find art galleries, historical sites, and lots of great shops to visit in this charming community. And, of course, there’s always plenty of great food and entertainment, too. While you’re in town, be sure to take advantage of the Shining Sea Bikeway, which connects Falmouth with Woods Hole by bike.

If you’re seeking something a little more off the beaten path, check out the historic town of Woods Hole. Part of Falmouth, Woods Hole has some of the most popular attractions and hidden gems. Explore the town’s waterfront and explore its many quaint shops and boutiques. You’ll find a quaint old-fashioned feel, as well as some beautiful scenic views of the harbor.

The town’s history is fascinating, and you can spend some time learning more about it by visiting the Woods Hole Historical Museum. While the museum is small, the exhibitions are varied and often change throughout the year. The museum was originally established as an adjunct to the town’s library in order to preserve the town’s cultural heritage. But it has since expanded to a campus of buildings with a diverse array of exhibits. Today, the museum is also an active publisher of local history and has free admission.

While visiting Falmouth, be sure to explore its historic village green, which used to be used for military exercises in pre-Revolutionary times. The town’s public beaches are some of the most popular in the region, and its waterfront is home to some of the finest restaurants. The town is also home to several world-class oceanic research institutions. You can take a trip out to Martha’s Vineyard on the nearby ferry.

Once whaling was no longer profitable, the town’s economy changed. In 1854, the total receipts from the American whaling fleet reached $10.8 million. This money was largely generated from activities in Massachusetts. During this period, the towns of Woods Hole and Falmouth prospered as important whaling stations. And they remain important today. You can enjoy the history of Falmouth and Woods Hole on your next vacation!

The first summer of the investigation consisted of collecting large numbers of fish from the area and studying their spawning patterns, growth rate, and food. They visited nearly every fishing trap and fish pound in the area, and asked the owners for their permission to collect specimens. A total of 106 species of fish were collected and preserved by these scientists for the National Museum. Of these, 20 or more were unknown to scientists outside of Massachusetts.

She was also an enthusiastic gardener, a passionate plant lover, and a devoted Red Sox fan. And, of course, she was an amazing cook. Betsy’s contributions to the community are immeasurable. If you haven’t yet experienced her graciousness, take the time to visit these towns and see what the area has to offer.
