Oxford County, Maine is home to the town of Fryeburg. The town has a population of 3,369 according to the 2020 census. The historic Fryeburg Academy is located in the center of town. This historic institution has been in business since 1802. Daniel Webster, who studied at the school, went on to become a famous lawyer. In 1956, Clarence E. Mulford, the author of the Hopalong Cassidy cowboy series, died in Fryeburg. The town’s annual Fryeburg Fair draws thousands of people from all over the state to view local products and farm animals. The fair is an important part of fall in the city, and is the highlight of the community.

The Hazel and Owen Currier Doll Museum is home to over 10,000 dolls. Located in the Fryeburg Town House, the museum has a wide range of styles and types, including Cabbage Patch Dolls and rag dolls. You’ll also find the world’s oldest private school, Fryeburg Academy. You can find a variety of other historic sites and museums here. In 1792, the town became the first town in the White Mountain region. A riverside location made this area an excellent agricultural center. In 1792, the first gristmill was established using water power from the Saco River. It was the first town in the region to be named after an American Revolutionary War general. The town was also home to many other industries including dairy farms, sawdust, and lumber. In 1918, the city was incorporated as a separate municipality.
