Fort Davis Texas is a census-designated place in Jeff Davis County, Texas, United States. The population of Fort Davis was 1,201 at the 2010 census. As of the 2000 census, its population was 1,050. The town is the county seat of Jeff Davis County. There are various things to do in Fort Davis. Its most famous landmark is the Fort Davis State Park. The town is famous for its mountains and is a popular destination for hiking. Hikers will find a variety of hiking trails at Davis Mountain State Park, including Skyline Drive Trail, Indian Lodge Trail, Limpia Creek, Sheep Pen Canyon Loop, and Old CCC Trail. You can also enjoy a day at the adobe Indian Lodge, which has fireplaces and a pool. This historical site has guided events, such as the adobe Indian Lodge and a museum with local history.

While exploring the city, don’t forget to visit the historic Fort Davis. The American Viticultural Area of Fort Davis features volcanic soils and Mediterranean-like climate. The town’s wineries include Chateau Wright, Blue Mountain Trail Vineyard, and Fort Davis Winery. Jack Rabbit Red is among the finest wines produced in the region. The town’s dark sky is preserved by the McDonald Observatory, which is located on Mount Locke at 6800 feet.

While visiting Fort Davis, consider a side trip to Marfa and Terlingua. Fort Davis is located just north of Big Bend National Park, 20 minutes from Chisos Basin Visitor Center, and three hours from El Paso. While you’re there, be sure to try some of the town’s restaurants. Whether you want a delicious lunch or an elaborate dinner, the community-owned establishments are sure to satisfy any taste buds.

The Powell Visitors Center is open Monday through Saturday from 9am to 5pm and Sundays from noon to 5pm. The Powell Visitor Center is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day. You can also hike the Skyline Drive Trail, the longest hiking trail in the area. The trail is open all year round. So, even if you’re traveling in winter, Fort Davis is an excellent choice to experience this historic site. Enjoy the sights and sounds of Fort Davis and its surrounding area.

In the early nineteenth century, the Fort Davis garrison was active, patrolling the frontier town and guarding mail relay stations. It escorted mail and freight trains, and fought occasional skirmishes with Indians. Although Fort Davis troops made little progress in pacifying the Indians, their presence boosted the town’s economic activities and reputation. During the 1880s, the town became an important cattle ranching center. Thousands of ambitious cattlemen flocked to the Trans-Pecos. Many sought refuge from Texas fever, and the Fort Davis garrison remained in the area.

There are many historic buildings in Fort Davis, including the renowned Historic Indian Lodge. The buildings have been lovingly restored and are now maintained by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The historic inn has an antique-filled dining room and a sheltered veranda. The Harvard Hotel & Lodge also offers suites that look like a Harvard Lodge. The rooms are named after family members or friends, and have quality linens and pillowtop mattresses. The hotel offers Internet access and a DVD player for guests to enjoy.
