Top 15 Places to Visit in Monterey California

December 10, 2021 | More: Monterey California| Places to Visit

Monterey is a charming city nestled along the rugged central coast of California. Once a major sardine packing center, this town is now home to a popular strip of seafood restaurants, gift shops, and historic converted factories that house many bars and eateries. The city is also home to the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, which features thousands of marine animals and interactive exhibits. If you have time, be sure to visit this historic site.

To see how the early history of the town developed, you can visit the Colton Hall Museum, which is free to tour. Alta California was named after a man named Walter Colton, a local businessman and the first American public building in California. The museum is located at the former sardine factory, which is still used to this day. It’s worth visiting the historic buildings to see how Monterey was once home to the city.

Another historical site to see is the Monterey Coast Guard Pier. The pier is an ideal location for spotting sea birds and marine life. While you’re there, you’ll also get to see harbor seals, sea otters, and a variety of other animals and birds. The pier is located away from the commercial areas, and the park is free to enter. You can even take guided tours of some of the buildings in the park.

To learn about the history of the city, you can tour the town’s historic sites. The area was settled by Spanish explorer Sebastian Vizcaino in 1602. The town has several interesting historical buildings that date back to this time. You can take guided tours of some of these buildings to learn about the history of the city. You’ll be glad you did. You won’t regret it. You’ll be happy you did.

You can visit the Custom House. The Mexican government built it in the 1820s to collect import taxes from Russian and English goods that came to the Alta California area. After the Americans took over, the building continued its function, although it no longer has the same use today. The building still looks like it did during the colonial era, and is open to the public. A trip to this historic landmark isn’t complete without a visit to Carmel-by-the-Sea, a famous 17-mile drive.

The town’s many historic buildings date back to the early 19th century, and you can find a few gems here. Old Monterey is home to the Monterey State Historic Park, which features several restored buildings. It is one of the newest national parks in California and has hiking trails for all abilities. The city also features flower gardens and cypress hedges, and the critically endangered California condor. Once extinct, the condor is now a common sight in the region.
